This post is a tour of Route 48 in seven screenshots. Each section tells you what one screenshot shows and how it connects to the game. Route 48 is a first-person driving survival game by HOLY STUDIOS. It launched in Early Access on Steam on October 12, 2026.

The desert and the infected

The image at the top of this post shows zombies that walk across a desert toward the player. The player holds a rifle and watches them come.

In Route 48, you fight zombies, which the game calls "the infected". You also fight armed hostile survivors. You fight with guns, in first person. But you do not have to fight every time. You decide when to fight, when to avoid danger, and when to get back on the road.

A pickup truck drives on an empty highway in a lightning storm. A bolt of lightning hits the land on the left side of the road. In the lower right corner of the screen, you can see a fuel gauge and a speedometer.

The fuel gauge is important. In Route 48, you scavenge for fuel and manage it carefully. The highway is also a part of a procedurally generated open world. Every new game generates a new world with different roads, towns, forests, loot locations, and encounters. So the road in your game will not look exactly like this one.

The player fits a steering wheel to a car in an abandoned garage. The driver door of the car is open, and it is dark outside. A small panel on the screen names the part.

This screenshot shows the car maintenance side of the game. You scavenge for parts, repair damaged parts, and make sure that your car continues to run. More vehicle parts and customization are planned for the full version of the game.

The headlight part, with the hood open

A bright purple car stands with its hood open. The player selects the headlight part. You can see the engine under the hood, next to the headlights.

Your car matters in Route 48. A broken vehicle can mean the end of your journey. If that happens, you can continue on foot. Our guide to car parts for gamers explains what a real headlight, battery, and radiator do.

A dark abandoned building

The player searches a dark abandoned building with a rifle. Daylight comes through an open doorway. Plants grow along the cracked walls.

In Route 48, you search abandoned buildings for food, weapons, ammunition, medical supplies, fuel, and valuable equipment. You also explore abandoned places, highways, forests, and hidden locations.

Combat in Route 48 is survival combat. You face the infected and armed survivors. In Early Access now, you get guns and an inventory system. More firearms are planned for the full version, and more types of zombies and hostile survivors are planned too.

An assault rifle under the moon

The player raises an assault rifle under a moonlit sky. Clouds surround the moon, and dark trees stand on the horizon.

This last screenshot shows the mood of the game. The tagline of Route 48 is "The world is gone, but the road goes on."

What the screenshots cannot show

A screenshot shows one moment in one world. In Route 48, every new game generates a new world. The roads, the towns, the forests, the loot locations, and the encounters change each time.

Here is what the Early Access version has now:

  • The full core gameplay loop
  • An endless procedural world
  • Driving and vehicle maintenance
  • Guns and an inventory system
  • Survival combat against zombies and armed survivors

Early Access is planned for approximately one year. Player feedback will shape the vehicle physics, the procedural generation, and the gunplay balance.
