Games like State of Decay: 9 zombie games with supply runs

The best games like State of Decay make every trip outside dangerous and make your vehicle a tool that you cannot lose. This list gives you nine zombie games where cars, fuel, and supply runs matter. For each game, we say how it handles vehicles, supply runs, and your group.
First, the State of Decay games themselves
If you only played the first State of Decay, play State of Decay 2 next. Undead Labs released it in 2018, and the Juggernaut Edition came to Steam in 2020. It adds online co-op for up to four players. State of Decay 3 is in development, but its Steam page has no release date yet.
What State of Decay gets right
Three systems make State of Decay feel tense:
- Vehicles are tools. Cars need fuel and repairs, and the trunk carries loot back to the base. A car that runs out of fuel in the wrong place can trap your people.
- Supply runs have a cost. Each trip for food or ammunition puts a survivor at risk.
- Death is permanent. In State of Decay 2, a survivor who dies stays dead.
The games below each share at least two of these systems.
Route 48 (our game)
Full disclosure: we made Route 48, so we put it first.
Route 48 puts the car at the center of the game: you scavenge for fuel and parts, and you repair damaged parts. A broken vehicle can mean the end of your journey. Each stop at an abandoned building is a supply run for food, ammunition, medical supplies, and fuel. Route 48 does not have a community or a home base, and it is in Early Access on Steam.
- Vehicles: Your car is your most important tool. You can continue on foot if it breaks.
- Supply runs: You search abandoned buildings in a procedurally generated world.
- Group: None. You fight zombies and armed survivors in first person.

Days Gone
Developer: Bend Studio. Released: 2019 (PC: 2021). Players: Single-player.
Days Gone is the closest match for the vehicle side of State of Decay. You play Deacon St. John, a drifter in post-pandemic Oregon, and your motorcycle is your main way to travel.
- Vehicles: The bike uses fuel, and you repair it with scrap. You refuel at camps or with fuel cans that you find.
- Supply runs: You search abandoned settlements for crafting materials and supplies.
- Group: No community to manage. Instead, huge Freaker hordes roam the land, and they are more dangerous at night.
It is a third-person, story-driven game. For more games of this type, read our list of games like Days Gone.
Project Zomboid
Developer: The Indie Stone. Released: Early Access on Steam since 2013. Players: Single-player, online multiplayer, or local split-screen co-op.
Project Zomboid is the slow and detailed version of the State of Decay idea. You see the world from an isometric view and survive in a large map loosely based on Kentucky.
- Vehicles: Cars have full physics and detailed mechanics. A car that runs changes how far you can go for loot.
- Supply runs: Every trip to a house or a store is a risk, because noise and light draw zombies to you.
- Group: You play one character, or you play with friends in multiplayer.
Choose it if the quiet moments in State of Decay were your favorite part.
Death Road to Canada
Developer: Rocketcat Games and Madgarden. Released: 2016. Players: Single-player or local co-op for up to 4 players.
This is a randomly generated road trip to Canada. You manage a car full of survivors, stop in towns to explore, and recruit strange people along the way.
- Vehicles: Your whole group travels in one car across the country.
- Supply runs: Each town stop is a short supply run through swarms of slow zombies.
- Group: The traits of your party change the options in text events. You can even teach a dog to drive.
It is shorter and much lighter in tone than State of Decay. Read our list of games like Death Road to Canada for similar road trips.
Infection Free Zone
Developer: Jutsu Games. Released: Early Access since 2024. Players: Single-player.
You type the name of a real city, and the game builds the map from OpenStreetMap data. Then you build a settlement in the buildings around you.
- Vehicles: You can use vehicles in the fight against night attacks.
- Supply runs: You decide where to search. Old grocery stores and pharmacies have supplies, but the infected can hide in dark buildings.
- Group: You lead a group of survivors and meet other groups that can be friendly or hostile.
This is the most strategic game on the list. Choose it if you liked the base management side of State of Decay.
Into the Dead: Our Darkest Days
Developer: PikPok. Released: Early Access since 2025. Players: Single-player.
This side-scrolling game follows a group of survivors who try to escape a Texas city in 1980. You move the group from shelter to shelter, and zombies attack your barricades each night.
- Vehicles: Not a focus. The game is about shelters and scavenge trips.
- Supply runs: You send survivors to scavenge, and each run risks a life. Stealth is often better than a fight.
- Group: You manage hunger, exhaustion, despair, and injuries for each person.
The Last Stand: Aftermath
Developer: Con Artist Games. Released: 2021. Players: Single-player.
Your survivor is infected from the start, and the virus will kill them in the end. You collect fuel to travel to new locations and gather supplies to craft weapons.
- Vehicles: Fuel decides how far you can travel.
- Supply runs: You go into dangerous zones for materials and fuel, past hordes of zombies.
- Group: When a survivor dies, you start again as a new one, with perks and upgrades from your progress.
7 Days to Die
Developer: The Fun Pimps. Released: 2024 (version 1.0), after Early Access from 2013. Players: Single-player or online co-op and PvP.
7 Days to Die is a first-person survival game with crafting and base building.
- Vehicles: You find parts, learn recipes, and craft a bicycle, a minibike, a motorcycle, a 4x4, or a gyrocopter.
- Supply runs: The world has hundreds of locations to loot, and traders give you quest jobs.
- Group: You can build a settlement with friends in co-op.
With the default settings, a Blood Moon horde attacks every seventh night. So your supply runs must end before that night.
Dying Light: The Beast
Developer: Techland. Released: 2025. Players: Single-player or online co-op.
This first-person game takes place in Castor Woods, a large open area of wilderness. You play Kyle Crane, who has the powers of a beast.
- Vehicles: You can drive an off-road vehicle through hordes of zombies.
- Supply runs: You explore and scavenge by day. At night, the infected become much more dangerous.
- Group: No community. The focus is melee combat, parkour, and the story.
